A Wonky Case is an educational escape room that revolves around Johnny Wonky, a missing journalist who has been secretly investigating a case and has, throughout the weeks, grown increasingly busy, distant and agitated. The players take up the roles of Wonky's colleagues and have to explore and inspect his messy home office to find out what has happened to him.
Disclaimer: the game contains mentions of Cannibalism.
This escape room tackles the topic of Media Literacy. Throughout the gameplay, the players encounter several types of misleading news being spread in different ways, as well as the consequences of not fact-checking conspiracy theories and falling for pseudoscience.
This game was designed for players of the ages 16-18. It is ideally played in a group of 3-5.
Most of the game assets are paper-based, for ease of sharing and printing. A game outline has been created to guide facilitators through the processes of:
1) Aquiring the extra materials required for the gameplay, namely numbered, alphabetical and directional locks, the UV flashlight and marker, as well as lockable boxes.
2) Preparing the printable materials and setting up the room.
3) Gameplay flow.
4) Game reset instructions.
At the end of the game, it is encouraged to have a debriefing session about the mentioned elements in the game. Debriefing questions were also suggested in the game outline to facilitate the reflective and learning process.
The game was created during an internship at Shokkin Group Estonia (https://et.shokkin.org/).
